CD Projekt has officially announced that Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, is now in pre-production.
The studio shared the news during its latest financial report, noting that the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 has sold an impressive 10 million copies.
Currently, 96 of CD Projekt’s 730 developers are assigned to Cyberpunk 2, while the majority (422) focus on The Witcher 4.
Cyberpunk 2 remains in early development, as does The Witcher 4. Previously known by its codename Orion, the sequel now has an official title.
Little is known about Cyberpunk 2, but Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith recently shared new details at the Digital Dragons 2025 conference. Pondsmith, who collaborated closely with CD Projekt on the 30 million-selling Cyberpunk 2077 and supported its 2020 launch, discussed his role in the sequel.
Pondsmith noted he’s less involved this time but still reviews scripts and has visited CD Projekt to assess progress.
“Last week, I met with various teams, checking out their work. They showed me new cyberware, asking, ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘That looks solid, it fits well.’”
Pondsmith also revealed a key detail: the sequel introduces a new city alongside Night City from Cyberpunk 2077. He described this new city as having a “dystopian Chicago vibe.”
“I spoke with an environment designer about the new location in Orion. There’s another city we explore—I won’t say more—but Night City remains. The new city’s vibe feels right, not like Blade Runner, but more like a Chicago that’s gone off the rails. I told them, ‘This works.’”
Pondsmith’s comments don’t confirm the new city is a futuristic Chicago, but rather it captures the essence of a dystopian version of the city. Whether it’s a reimagined Chicago remains unconfirmed.

Questions remain about whether Cyberpunk 2 will build on the existing Night City or introduce a reimagined version, and how playable each city will be. At minimum, the sequel appears to feature two fully realized cities.
CD Projekt is juggling multiple projects. A new Cyberpunk animation is in development for Netflix, following the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 is slated for release on Nintendo Switch 2 next month.
