In an exciting twist, Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios announced their next project in the series, and it's a remake that fans didn't see coming. On April 24, via a Twitter (X) post, they introduced Frostpunk 1886, which reimagines the original game using the powerful Unreal Engine.
The announcement highlighted that Frostpunk 1886 will include a brand new Purpose Path, the much-anticipated mod support, and more, all while preserving the legacy of the original game. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, the developers shared their vision for this ambitious project.
11 bit Studios is transitioning from their proprietary Liquid Engine, used in the first game, to the Unreal Engine. Having already utilized Unreal Engine 5 for Frostpunk 2, the studio recognized the potential to enhance the original Frostpunk. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.
