Housemarque has unveiled Saros, the highly anticipated follow-up to their acclaimed 2022 roguelite shooter Returnal. Featuring Rahul Kohli's voice acting, Saros launches in 2026 for PlayStation 5 with enhanced PS5 Pro optimization.
A New Cosmic Adventure From Returnal's Creators
Debuted during today's PlayStation State of Play, Saros showcases Housemarque's signature style. Players control Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer investigating mysteries on a hostile planet plagued by perpetual eclipse conditions and menaced by colossal entities. The gameplay teaser's "come back stronger" tagline hints at roguelike elements, while dazzling bullet-hell visuals confirm Housemarque's trademark gameplay approach.
Creative director Gregory Louden describes Saros as representing the "pinnacle evolution" of Housemarque's gameplay-focused philosophy. While establishing a fresh single-player universe, the project builds upon Returnal's acclaimed third-person combat mechanics.
Evolving Beyond Returnal's Formula
However, Saros introduces significant innovations. Louden explains on PlayStation Blog that permanent progression differs substantially from Returnal's systems. Though death still transforms Saros' world, players can permanently enhance their weapons and armor capabilities across attempts.
Housemarque plans to reveal extended gameplay footage later this year, promising deeper insights into Saros' mechanics. For complete coverage of today's PlayStation State of Play announcements, visit our full event breakdown.
