Development Followed X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge
Edwards shared never-before-seen images and gameplay footage on Twitter (X) from a cancelled Iron Man game slated for a 2003 release. The game, tentatively titled "The Invincible Iron Man," was in development following the studio's success with X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge. His posts included the game's title card, Genepool Software's logo, screenshots, and original Xbox gameplay footage showing the startup screen and a desert-set tutorial.
Activision's Decision to Cancel "The Invincible Iron Man"
Despite fan enthusiasm, Activision cancelled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards offered several potential reasons, including delays to the film adaptation, dissatisfaction with the game's progress, or possibly another developer being chosen for the project.
The game's depiction of Tony Stark also drew attention. Released nearly five years before Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU portrayal, the character's suit design closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version from the early 2000s. Edwards stated the design choice was the decision of the game's designer. He also promised to share more gameplay footage, a promise yet to be fulfilled at the time of writing.
