Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans, While Players Advocate for Expanded Character Ban System

NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The incident, which occurred on January 3rd, saw numerous non-Windows users – specifically those playing on Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck using compatibility layers – unfairly flagged as cheaters.

The developer attributed the error to their anti-cheat system misidentifying compatibility layer software as cheating programs. The bans have since been lifted, and NetEase expressed regret for the inconvenience caused. They encouraged players to report actual cheating behavior and utilize the in-game or Discord support channels for appeals against wrongful bans. This issue highlights the ongoing challenge of accurately detecting cheating while avoiding false positives, particularly with the increasing use of compatibility layers like Proton on SteamOS.

Separately, a significant portion of the Marvel Rivals community is calling for a broader implementation of the in-game character ban system. Currently, this feature, which allows players to remove specific characters from selection, is only available in Diamond rank and above. Players on the game's subreddit expressed frustration, arguing that the lack of character bans in lower ranks creates an uneven playing field and limits strategic diversity. One player highlighted the difficulty of competing against opponents with significantly advantageous character choices. Many believe that extending the character ban mechanic to all ranks would enhance gameplay balance, provide valuable learning opportunities for newer players, and promote more diverse team compositions beyond simple DPS-focused strategies.

NetEase has yet to publicly respond to these concerns regarding the character ban system's limited availability. The future of this feature's implementation remains uncertain.
