Jon Watts, who directed Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy, was originally slated to helm The Fantastic Four: First Steps - a tantalizing prospect given his stellar work with Marvel's web-slinger. Surprisingly, Watts himself ultimately stepped away from the project, recently explaining he was simply too "drained" after navigating the pandemic-era challenges of No Way Home's production.
The filmmaker revealed during a masterclass at Malta's Mediterrane Film Festival on June 26 that the extraordinary pressures of COVID-era filmmaking proved overwhelming. "Managing creative demands while ensuring cast/crew safety during the pandemic was emotionally exhausting," Watts confessed. "The added complications of disrupted global visual effects workflows made traditional post-production processes exceptionally difficult."
Watts, whose recent producer credit includes Final Destination: Bloodlines, had initially planned to tackle First Steps between Spider-Man projects. But when pre-production loomed, he recognized his creative energy was depleted. "After the dual challenges of blockbuster filmmaking and pandemic restrictions, I knew I couldn't deliver the quality this franchise deserves," he explained. "Marvel fully understood - they'd witnessed firsthand how demanding that experience was."
Though stepping away, Watts expressed enthusiasm for Matt Shakman's upcoming version, acknowledging it will be surreal to watch as an audience member. The star-studded First Steps - featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn - hits theaters July 25.
