WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience
2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvement with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type were unfortunately unavailable for preview. However, my hands-on time focused on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode revealed some promising refinements.
Showcase Mode: A Historical Journey
This year's Showcase centers on The Bloodline, spanning generations of Anoa'i wrestlers. It features three match types: recreating history, creating history, and – most excitingly – altering history. I experienced recreating Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins bout. While enjoyable, the mode still has minor issues.
Addressing Past Shortcomings
WWE 2K24's Showcase suffered from excessive use of real-life footage ("Slingshot"). While not entirely eliminated, 2K25 significantly reduces this, using in-engine recreations for key moments. These are shorter and less disruptive, improving the overall flow. However, I experienced a loss of control during the final moments of the Nia Jax match, highlighting a lingering issue.
Refined Gameplay Mechanics
The checklist system, a previous point of contention, returns but with optional timed objectives offering cosmetic rewards without penalties for failure. This is a positive step. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout feature, offering a fresh perspective for fans.
Core Gameplay Enhancements
Core gameplay remains largely consistent, retaining the enjoyable grappling system from WWE 2K24. However, the return of chain wrestling adds depth, allowing players to gain an advantage through a mini-game. The submission system also returns, though it's optional, as are other quick-time events.
Weapon Throwing and Intergender Gameplay
Weapon throwing returns with an expanded roster and new environments, including the WWE archives. The inclusion of intergender matches, along with the largest roster ever (300+ wrestlers), significantly expands gameplay possibilities.
New Match Type: Underground
A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition in a Fight Club-esque setting with lumberjacks, promises a unique experience. A full match and detailed explanation will be available soon.
Conclusion
WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with smart refinements. While the major new features remain unseen, the improvements to Showcase Mode and gameplay mechanics suggest another successful iteration. Whether the new modes will truly elevate it remains to be seen, but based on my preview, it's a promising evolution.
