The creator of a popular Bloodborne 60fps patch has received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony. Lance McDonald, a renowned video game modder, announced the news on Twitter, stating he removed links to the patch as requested by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
McDonald referenced a past encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he jokingly mentioned creating the Bloodborne 60fps mod. This humorous anecdote highlights the ironic situation: a fan-made patch addresses a long-standing fan demand for a 60fps update to the critically acclaimed FromSoftware title.
Bloodborne's status as a largely untouched title since its PS4 release is a significant point of contention among fans. While calls for an official next-gen patch, remaster, or even a sequel persist, Sony has remained silent. This lack of official support has fueled the community's efforts, with recent breakthroughs in PS4 emulation, specifically ShadPS4, offering a near-remaster experience with 60fps gameplay on PC. This advancement might have prompted Sony's more assertive response. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.
Earlier this month, Yoshida offered his perspective on Bloodborne's inactivity in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's personal attachment to the game and his busy schedule prevent him from allowing others to work on it, a sentiment respected by the PlayStation team.
Despite Miyazaki's frequent deflection of Bloodborne questions in interviews, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that the game would benefit from a release on more modern hardware. This leaves Bloodborne in a state of limbo nearly a decade after its initial release, despite the persistent fan demand.
