Dev Fights 'Censorship' Backlash with Before-and-After Screenshots Amid Steam Review-Bombing

by Joseph Jul 07,2025

In response to growing concerns from its player base, VOID Interactive has issued a detailed statement addressing recent adjustments made to the PC version of Ready or Not. These changes were implemented in preparation for the game’s upcoming console release scheduled for July 15. The studio emphasized that the modifications were necessary to align with global platform policies and age rating requirements, while still preserving the core tone and intensity of the game.

The controversy began when the developer acknowledged altering content related to gore, nudity, violence, and depictions categorized as “mistreatment of children.” Rather than maintaining separate versions of the game for PC and consoles—which the team noted could introduce additional bugs—some revisions have also been applied to the PC edition.

Initially, VOID stated these updates were minor, claiming that "most people wouldn't notice if we didn't say anything." However, despite this assertion, the announcement triggered a wave of backlash from the community. As a result, Ready or Not’s Steam page saw a sharp decline in recent user reviews, shifting to a “mostly negative” rating, though the overall review status remains “very positive.” Many players expressed dissatisfaction, citing concerns over perceived censorship.

In an effort to clear up confusion and dispel rumors, the studio released a follow-up [ttpp] statement offering full transparency on what specific elements were altered. Alongside before-and-after screenshots, the message reiterated that the visual impact of gore and violence remains unchanged.

"Recently, we shared that Ready or Not’s PC version underwent minor content changes to support stability and align with policies enforced by global platforms and age rating bodies," the statement reads. "These adjustments were made to ensure a smooth global launch across platforms — while fully preserving the game’s tone, themes, and intensity."

Unfortunately, misconceptions and misinformation have spread regarding the scale and nature of these changes. To address this, we are providing full visibility into exactly what has and hasn’t changed. Visual comparisons are included to demonstrate that the game's atmosphere and graphical impact remain unaffected. Specifically, the intensity of gore and violent effects—which contribute significantly to the game’s immersive realism—have not been reduced.

The studio confirmed that key missions such as Elephant, Neon Tomb, and the highly debated Valley of the Dolls scenario remain untouched. VOID reaffirmed its commitment to creative freedom and the belief in crafting experiences that challenge boundaries in pursuit of immersion and realism. This philosophy remains unchanged.

However, the studio acknowledged the realities of working within a global framework governed by platform standards, rating systems, and legal regulations. While they may not always agree with how certain content is classified, VOID clarified that changes were only made where absolutely necessary and strictly in line with regulatory requirements—no further alterations were made beyond what was required.

As a hyper-realistic tactical FPS, Ready or Not is held to a different standard than more stylized or fictional titles. The team recognizes this as part of the current publishing landscape, but stressed that it does not reflect a shift in their creative vision or values.
