Helldivers 2 Creative Director Goes on Sabbatical After 11 Years 'Working Around the Clock' on the Same IP, Will Return to Work on Arrowhead’s Next Game

by Blake Feb 28,2025

Helldivers 2's creative director, Johan Pilestedt, has announced a sabbatical, after which he'll transition to Arrowhead's next project. Pilestedt's tweet detailed his eleven years of dedicated work on the Helldivers franchise, beginning with the 2013 original and continuing with Helldivers 2 since early 2016. He cited the toll this intensive work has taken on his personal life, stating his need for time to reconnect with family and friends. He expressed confidence in Arrowhead's continued support for Helldivers 2 during his absence.

Pilestedt's prominent role following Helldivers 2's February 2024 launch propelled him into the spotlight. Despite initial challenges, the game achieved remarkable success, becoming PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling title, surpassing 12 million copies in just 12 weeks, leading to a planned movie adaptation. This success, however, brought unexpected consequences: a significant increase in online toxicity, as Pilestedt himself revealed in May 2023. He detailed the unprecedented level of threats and abusive behavior directed at the studio's staff.

Prior to Helldivers 2's release, Arrowhead had already enjoyed success with the original Helldivers and Magicka. However, the sequel's massive popularity amplified the studio's profile, exacerbating the negative aspects of increased visibility. The game's launch was marred by server issues and subsequent controversies, including player complaints about weapon balance, Premium Warbonds, and Sony's initially mandatory PlayStation Network account linking for PC players. While Sony eventually reversed this controversial decision, the resulting review-bombing on Steam significantly impacted the team's workload.

In response to Helldivers 2's success, Pilestedt transitioned from CEO to chief creative officer to better focus on game development and community engagement. Shams Jorjani, formerly of Paradox Interactive, assumed the CEO role.

While details about Arrowhead's next game remain undisclosed, its release is likely some time away. Meanwhile, Arrowhead continues to update Helldivers 2, recently introducing the Illuminate faction to maintain player engagement.
