The Blood of Dawnwalker has finally made its grand entrance with a captivating reveal trailer, blending pre-rendered scenes with brief snippets of gameplay. This trailer not only highlights the game's thematic similarities to The Witcher but also showcases its integration of Persona-like elements.
Developed by Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio established by former CD Projekt Red developers who contributed to The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, The Blood of Dawnwalker was first announced as Dawnwalker in January 2024. It was described as a narrative-driven open-world RPG set in a dark fantasy world, emphasizing meaningful player choices.
Exactly a year later, on January 13, Rebel Wolves and publisher Bandai Namco unveiled The Blood of Dawnwalker through a dedicated reveal stream. The event concluded with an impressive cinematic trailer lasting over four and a half minutes, setting the stage for the game's dark fantasy world and introducing the Dawnwalkers—powerful vampire-like beings. The trailer also introduced Coen, the game's protagonist, who becomes a Dawnwalker at the outset of the story.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Echoes The Witcher
With its dark fantasy setting, monstrous creatures, and an open-world RPG framework featuring morally gray choices, The Blood of Dawnwalker strongly resonates with The Witcher. The game's tagline, "the world needs what it fears," further enhances this connection. Fans of The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine expansion, with its vampires and tough decisions, will find The Blood of Dawnwalker's premise particularly appealing. The game includes a morality system, allowing players to decide whether Coen should embrace his Dawnwalker nature to save his family or hold onto his humanity.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Borrows from Persona
While The Blood of Dawnwalker shares surface similarities with The Witcher, it also introduces innovative elements inspired by Persona. The game incorporates time management mechanics, where every quest consumes time. "There are multiple approaches to saving Coen’s family with no clear division between main and side quests; you decide on how you spend the time," explained Rebel Wolves co-founder and game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. This design choice, which Rebel Wolves calls a "narrative sandbox," means players cannot complete all quests and story arcs in one playthrough, encouraging replayability and unique experiences with each run.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is currently in development for PC and next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Envisioned as the first installment in a trilogy, it will be published by Bandai Namco. Although no specific release date has been set, given its 2022 start and triple-A budget, a launch before 2027 seems unlikely. Rebel Wolves plans to share a gameplay reveal in the summer of 2025.
