Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

by Jonathan May 14,2025

Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in the layoff of a small number of staff members involved. The news initially surfaced through a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator, who mentioned being part of the project for the past year before its cancellation.

IGN independently verified the cancellation of this multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project, which was spearheaded by a team previously working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources described it as a "small" group. Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has confirmed on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.

This development adds to the ongoing series of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructurings within Electronic Arts (EA). The trend began in 2023 with the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unspecified number at Codemasters. The situation escalated nearly a year ago when EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS. As part of these cuts, around two dozen Respawn employees were affected. Since then, BioWare has undergone further restructuring, with developers being reassigned and additional key staff members laid off.

IGN has sought a statement from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
