The developers and publishers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have made it clear that they are not aiming to transform the game into a full-fledged "live service" model, following a backlash over community events that some players felt promoted "FOMO" (Fear Of Missing Out). FOMO is a common strategy employed by live service games to drive player engagement and encourage spending on limited-time virtual items, creating a sense that if these items are not obtained during their availability, the opportunity is lost forever.
This approach is often criticized for fostering an unhealthy relationship between a video game and its community. In 2021, research commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted that many games use psychological tactics, including the fear of missing out on limited-time items or special deals, to encourage purchases of loot boxes. While Space Marine 2 does not feature loot boxes, it has introduced community events aimed at unlocking exclusive cosmetics, sparking concerns and leading some to label the game as adopting live service elements.
In response to the community's feedback, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive acknowledged the negative reception of these events and the FOMO concerns they raised. They reassured players that all items available through these events would be re-released for everyone in the future. Their statement emphasized that community events are meant to allow the most dedicated players to unlock items early, not to cause stress or frustration. The developers also apologized for the cumbersome process of unlocking these items and promised to simplify it for a better player experience.
To address these concerns and show goodwill, Focus Entertainment is offering the emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, previously available only to those who achieved specific in-game victories before the event's end date on March 3.
As the community awaits the upcoming 7.0 update, which promises new weapons, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, Space Marine 2 continues to build on its successful launch. The game, which became the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever, has sold 5 million copies since its record-breaking debut last year.
