Studio Rebel Wolves, founded by ex-CD Projekt RED developers, recently streamed the full reveal of their debut project - the dark fantasy action RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker. During the presentation, the team debuted a four-minute cinematic trailer that serves as the game's opening sequence.
A Dark Fantasy World Awaits
Set in an alternate 14th century Europe, The Blood of Dawnwalker follows protagonist Coen, who gains supernatural powers after the dramatic events shown in the trailer. Tasked with rescuing loved ones from vampires, players have just 30 in-game days and nights to succeed - with time advancing only during specific gameplay moments requiring careful management.
Central to the experience are moral choices affecting both gameplay and narrative. Players must constantly balance Coen's humanity against his growing vampiric nature. The critical Blood Hunger mechanic introduces risk-reward tension - prolonged periods without feeding may cause the protagonist to lose control, potentially claiming unexpected victims.
Open-World Vampire Fantasy
The game features a meticulously crafted open world where time of day significantly impacts gameplay. Developers describe it as a "narrative sandbox" offering extensive freedom in exploration and decision-making.
Currently in development for two years using Unreal Engine 5, The Blood of Dawnwalker is slated for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms. While no release window has been announced, the cinematic debut signals substantial progress on this ambitious vampire epic.
Rebel Wolves' pedigree from The Witcher series suggests deep narrative ambitions for their inaugural title. With its Gothic aesthetic and innovative time mechanics, The Blood of Dawnwalker could offer a fresh take on the action-RPG genre when it eventually emerges from the shadows.
