Electronic Arts (EA) announced today that the next installment in the Battlefield franchise is slated for release sometime during its fiscal year 2026, spanning April 2025 to March 2026. This announcement accompanied the unveiling of Battlefield Labs, a new player testing initiative designed to gather feedback and shape the game's development. A brief pre-alpha gameplay glimpse was shared as part of this announcement.
EA also introduced Battlefield Studios, a collective of four studios collaborating on the project: DICE (Stockholm), Motive, Ripple Effect, and Criterion. DICE leads multiplayer development, Motive contributes to single-player missions and multiplayer maps, Ripple Effect focuses on attracting new players, and Criterion handles the single-player campaign. These teams are currently in a crucial development phase, actively seeking player input through Battlefield Labs. Participation in Battlefield Labs requires signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
EA emphasized the importance of player feedback in refining core gameplay elements, including combat, destruction, weapons, vehicles, gadgets, maps, modes, and squad play. Conquest and Breakthrough modes will be tested, along with explorations of new ideas and improvements to the class system.
This new Battlefield marks a return to a modern setting after previous iterations in World War I, World War II, and the near future. Concept art hints at ship-to-ship and helicopter combat, alongside natural disaster elements like wildfires. The developers cited Battlefield 3 and 4 as inspiration, aiming to recapture the core essence of the franchise while expanding its offerings to attract a broader audience. The game will feature 64 players per map and abandon the Specialist system from Battlefield 2042.
The project represents a significant investment for EA, involving multiple studios and aiming to address the shortcomings of Battlefield 2042. While EA has yet to announce platforms or a final title, the emphasis on player feedback and the return to core Battlefield mechanics suggest a concerted effort to regain player trust and deliver a successful entry in the franchise.
