In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms will function as a formidable natural force, not as tools players can summon at their convenience. Unlike in Frank Herbert's novels where characters utilize thumpers to call upon these majestic creatures, this feature won't be available in the game.

According to the game's developers, sandworms are treated as NPCs with predefined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors embedded within the game engine. Players won't have the ability to strategically summon a worm near an enemy base to disrupt their plans. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players can attempt to draw its attention—perhaps by moving actively through the sand or using a thumper. Keep in mind, though, that these actions don't ensure the worm will appear in the desired area.
Riding sandworms, an iconic element of Herbert's books and a hallmark of Freman culture, will not be part of *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the *Dune* cinematic universe as the reason for excluding this feature. However, there's a glimmer of hope as post-launch patches might introduce additional content related to Freman culture, potentially including the much-anticipated worm-riding mechanics. For now, though, there's no guarantee that players will get to experience this iconic activity.
*Dune: Awakening* is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow later.
