It has been nearly a year and a half since Baldur's Gate 3 released, and many of us are still deeply engrossed in our second, third, or even tenth playthroughs. With developer Larian Studios stepping away from the series, the future of Baldur's Gate now rests with Hasbro. Luckily, it seems we won't have to wait long before hearing at least something concrete about what's next for the beloved franchise.
During a conversation with IGN at this week's Game Developers Conference, Dan Ayoub, SVP of digital games at Hasbro, noted that with Larian moving on, the company has "a lot of parties showing serious interest in Baldur's Gate."
"We're currently shaping our long-term vision and deciding exactly how to move forward with the series. In fact, very soon, we'll have some announcements to share on that front."
Ayoub didn't specify whether these announcements would involve a full-fledged new Baldur's Gate title or another type of crossover, similar to the one seen with Magic: The Gathering. However, he did express that he ultimately wants to see a Baldur's Gate 4, while acknowledging that development would likely take considerable time.
"We're in a challenging position, in some ways," he commented. "But we're in no rush. That's the key—we're committed to a thoughtful, deliberate approach. We have multiple strategies and ideas in motion, and we're starting to feel ready to slowly begin sharing a few details. Again, without over-promising, expect some news on this in the very near future."
Ayoub also recognized the tremendous pressure to deliver a worthy successor to Baldur's Gate 3—a standard that influences not only the Baldur's Gate series but other Dungeons & Dragons projects as well, including the game Hasbro unveiled last year.

"I never shy away from a challenge," he stated. "Anything that pushes us to raise our creative bar is welcome—developers thrive when they have ambitious goals. We’ve already seen the team brainstorming exciting new ideas, thinking, 'We need to aim higher and think bigger.' That's exactly the mindset we want. Our hope is to continually raise expectations, inspiring everyone to reach a little further."
We discussed several other subjects with Ayoub, including Magic: The Gathering, Hasbro’s collaboration with Saber Interactive, and the company's broader gaming strategy. Look out for our complete interview next week.
