Keiichiro Toyama, the creative force behind Silent Hill and Slitterhead, has begun work on an entirely new title.
During an interview with Famitsu at an exhibition showcasing the striking concept art for Slitterhead, Toyama reflected on the horror game's reception, the experience of helming his own studio, and teased that another unannounced project is already in development.
While Toyama emphasized that the studio's primary focus wasn't on commercial success, he acknowledged that Bokeh Studio had hoped for stronger sales, even as the game has cultivated a dedicated cult following. He also noted some audience confusion over whether Slitterhead was primarily a horror or an action game, which clouded its marketing message. Despite this, he expressed immense pride in the Bokeh development team for crafting such a uniquely bizarre experience.
"Considering my age, how long we can continue is admittedly a challenging question," Toyama stated, as translated by Automaton. "Nevertheless, I recognize the importance of eventually passing the baton to the next generation. As a studio, we are still on our journey toward achieving our ultimate vision."
So, what can we expect from his next game?
“I can't share specific details yet, but our next project is officially underway. From the start, our vision for this studio was to explore a diverse range of ideas, including proposals from our younger developers and even venturing into more lighthearted titles," he explained. He conceded that while Bokeh's independent status fosters creative freedom, the studio is still far from having the resources to pursue every ambition without constraint.
"Once again, we must dedicate our full efforts as a studio and demonstrate that we are capable of meeting this challenge. We are actively working toward that objective. However, we are still in the very early stages, so I'm confident we will be able to share more information about the new game at a later date."
Notably, Toyama did clarify that he did not design Slitterhead's conclusion with "a sequel in mind," strongly indicating that his next project will not be Slitterhead 2, though a follow-up remains a future possibility.
Our own assessment of Slitterhead was less than stellar, with IGN's review awarding it a 5: "Like a battle-worn blade that has lost its edge, Slitterhead becomes progressively duller and ultimately fails to make its mark."
As for the Silent Hill franchise? The next chapter is Silent Hill f. While the series' foundational J-horror elements have diminished over time, Silent Hill f aims to reinvigorate them, reportedly placing a greater emphasis on combat mechanics.
