Halo Studios Embarks on a New Era of Halo Game Development
Microsoft-owned Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) has announced the commencement of several new Halo game projects. This announcement also unveiled the studio's rebranding, signifying a fresh start for the franchise.Studio Head Pierre Hintze stated, "Halo's history comprises two distinct chapters: Bungie and 343 Industries. Now, we aim to deliver what our fans crave." He emphasized a shift not only in development efficiency but also in the fundamental approach to creating Halo games. "We're starting a new chapter," he declared.
The studio will leverage Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) for its upcoming Halo titles. UE5's reputation for high-quality graphics and realistic physics aligns with the studio's ambition. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney tweeted, "Epic is honored that Halo Studios has chosen our tools for their future endeavors."
Halo's leadership team detailed the franchise's strategic redirection. Hintze explained that previous efforts were overly focused on supporting Halo Infinite, and the transition to UE5 will facilitate the creation of higher-quality games. "Our singular focus is to develop the best possible Halo games," he affirmed.
Halo franchise COO Elizabeth Van Wyck added, "Our success hinges on creating games players want to play. This new structure empowers the game developers to make key decisions." She also highlighted the importance of gathering extensive player feedback to guide the franchise's future.
Studio Art Director Chris Matthew emphasized that the move to UE5 addresses limitations of the previous engine, Slipspace. He stated, "Certain aspects of Slipspace are nearly 25 years old. Unreal Engine offers capabilities unavailable in Slipspace, capabilities that would have required substantial time and resources to replicate."
The adoption of UE5 will also streamline the update process, enabling quicker content delivery and responsiveness to player feedback. Van Wyck noted, "It's not just about development time, but also about update speed and adapting to player preferences." Halo Studios has begun recruiting for these new projects.
