On June 6, 2025, 1047 Games released Splitgate 2—but now, less than two months later, the developer is pulling back on its launch. Alongside announcing temporary maintenance mode for Splitgate 2, the studio confirmed it will shut down the original Splitgate's servers and lay off 45 employees.
Splitgate 2 Enters Redevelopment Phase
1047 Games revealed plans today to pause ongoing updates for Splitgate 2, its recently launched title, to focus on rebuilding core game elements. While the game remains playable and will still receive its promised Chapter 3 update along with critical fixes, the developer acknowledges the current version needs significant improvements.
The studio anticipates launching the revamped Splitgate 2 in early 2026 with what it describes as "substantial, sweeping changes."
This decision follows widespread criticism regarding Splitgate 2's launch state. Player counts dwindled rapidly, while Reddit threads became dominated by discussions about missing features, bugs, and frustration with the game's direction.
CEO Ian Proulx admitted in an interview: "We're treating this as a reset. The current version feels more like an extended beta than a finished product."
Community Feedback Shapes Future
Proulx detailed three key areas they'll address based on player feedback:
- Core feature implementation (leaderboards, progression systems)
- Expanded portal mechanics (more portal walls, enhanced portal gameplay)
- Revised game modes (shifting toward classic arena-style gameplay)
The monetization model will also undergo changes, though specifics remain undecided. Proulx confirmed Splitgate 2 will retain its free-to-play structure while simplifying its storefront and battle pass system.
Development Challenges and Cost-Cutting
The studio acknowledges overambitious scope contributed to Splitgate 2's troubled launch. Proulx reflected: "We spread ourselves too thin trying to deliver arena combat, battle royale, and map creation tools simultaneously."
1047 Games is implementing significant cost reductions, including:
- Shutting down Splitgate 1 servers within a month
- Laying off 45 employees (28% of workforce)
- Reducing operating expenses to extend development runway
Proulx remains optimistic despite the challenges: "We've faced tougher situations during Splitgate 1's development. This industry tests everyone, but we're committed to delivering the experience players deserve."
The relaunched Splitgate 2 will incorporate feedback from ongoing community playtests—a process the studio previously employed successfully during the original Splitgate's development.
