As the release date for Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28 draws closer, Capcom has announced efforts to potentially lower the game's recommended GPU requirements. This update was shared through the official German Monster Hunter X/Twitter account, which also mentioned that Capcom is considering the development of a standalone PC benchmarking tool to help players assess their system's readiness.
Currently, Capcom suggests a minimum GPU of an Nvidia GTX 1660 Super or an AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT to achieve 30 FPS at 1080p. These specs are set at an internal resolution of 720p, with the graphics upscaled using DLSS or FSR at the lowest settings.
For those targeting 60 FPS at 1080p, Capcom recommends using an RTX 2070 Super, RTX 4060, or AMD RX 6700 XT, with upscaling and Frame Generation technologies enabled. It's worth noting that only the RTX 4060 supports Nvidia Frame Generation, while the RTX 2070 Super and RX 6700 XT rely on FSR 3, which experienced ghosting artifacts during the previous Monster Hunter Wilds beta.
Experts at Digital Foundry suggest that using Frame Generation to target 60 FPS may not be ideal, recommending a baseline of 40 FPS for third-person games to maintain responsiveness and tactile feel. Games running below 60 FPS with upscaling can introduce noticeable latency, impacting the player experience.
During the open beta of Monster Hunter Wilds, players with lower-end hardware, including those with mid-range GPUs like the RTX 3060, faced challenges. A common issue was a low-LOD bug that prevented the game from loading detailed textures for characters and monsters.
Monster Hunter Wilds is developed on the RE Engine, which made its debut with Resident Evil 7 in 2017. The engine has been utilized in titles such as Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter Rise, and Street Fighter 6, generally offering smooth performance across various platforms. However, larger open-world games like Dragon’s Dogma 2, which also used the RE Engine, have encountered performance issues on both consoles and PCs. This raises concerns about the potential performance of Monster Hunter Wilds.
With an open beta scheduled for early February and a full launch later in the month, Capcom's efforts to adjust GPU requirements could be crucial for ensuring a successful PC release of Monster Hunter Wilds.
